Started by René Ramillon and André Vincent, the name Moncler is an abbreviation of its founding mountain village near Grenoble. It originally produced sleeping bags, tents, and protective work jackets for alpine workers before expanding into mountaineering gear.

Luxury Shift: Under chairman and CEO Remo Ruffini (following his 2003 acquisition), the label transformed from functional athletic gear into a global luxury fashion house known for the Moncler Genius collaborative design projects.

Born on August 27, 1961, Remo Ruffini is the son of Gianfranco Ruffini who, in the 1970s, was owner of a clothing company in the US called Gianfranco Ruffini Ltd. and Remo's mother, Enrica, also owned a clothing company.

Remo Ruffini is now an Italian billionaire businessman, the chairman and CEO of Moncler and controls Double R Srl.
